Clubs Under Threat

What the Government Plans to Do

Following the release of the Productivity Commission's Report into gambling, the Federal Labor Government responded by saying they would support a voluntary system of pre-commitment, promised consultation with industry and advised an assessment of the costs and benefits of any proposed measure would be made.

After the 2010 Federal Election, the Prime Minister, without consulting with industry or her own party colleagues, reneged on the agreement with the club industry and did a deal with Andrew Wilkie MP to secure his support for Labor forming government.

This deal involves the implementation full and mandatory pre-commitment technology, potentially involving fingerprinting anyone who wants to play a poker machine, by 2014 and an ATM withdrawal limit of $250 in all poker machine venues except casinos.

If this deal was implemented, it would cost the club industry billions of dollars and would be the death of many clubs in Australia.

It is vital that the club industry and its members and supporters, tell our local politicians what we think of the Prime Minister's deal.
