Trial Receives in-principle Support - 16 February 2012

Chief Executive of ClubsACT, Jeff House, announced that following a Special General Meeting held today, the members of ClubsACT have given in-principle agreement to participating in a trial in the ACT, subject to the further and successful negotiation of a range of matters.

"The members have agreed in-principle to a trial, the form and nature of which will be the subject of further negotiation with the Commonwealth Government. I, as Chief Executive have also been formally authorized to negotiate on behalf of the members of ClubsACT however as I have said previously, the final decision to participate or not will always rest with individual members.

"This in-principle agreement not only demonstrates our commitment to the process but ensures the discussions we have with the Commonwealth proceed on a formal footing.

"The members acknowledge that the purpose of the trial, sought by the Commonwealth, is to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of mandatory pre-commitment as a measure to deal with problem gambling. This is the basis upon which any trial results should be evaluated.

"The members have raised a number of issues which will form the basis of our further discussions with the government, however the good will which we have seen thus far will continue to underpin our approach to this issue.

"I look forward to continuing to work with the Commonwealth on this important matter".
