Clubs provide support for Victorian Bushfire victims
Date 10 February 2009
Community based licensed clubs have responded immediately to a call from ClubsACT to assist various communities in country Victoria that have been devastated by the bushfires over the week-end.
Max Mercer, President of Clubs ACT, said that ACT clubs and their counterparts throughout Australia have initiated fund raising activities to provide much needed help.
“For our part we’ve joined with local radio station Canberra FM to use some of the money that is raised to buy non-perishable food items to be transported down to Victoria immediately. We will also be making a donation to The Salvation Army’s bushfire fund,” he said.
“Canberrans know first-hand what it is like to be ravaged by a bushfire and our thoughts and sympathies are with those people and families who have lost loved ones and everything they have worked for in what is Australia’s worst ever natural disaster,” Max Mercer said.
A total of $50,750 has been donated by 12 of Canberra’s Community Based Licensed Clubs:
- ACT Rugby Union Club
- Ainslie Football & Social Club
- Belconnen Soccer Club
- Canberra Labor Club Group
- Canberra Raiders Sports Club
- Canberra Southern Cross Club
- Eastlake Football Club
- Hellenic Club of Canberra
- The Burns Club
- The Mawson Club
- The Tradies Group
- The Vikings Group
“$20 000 will be spent through Supa Barn and we want to acknowledge and congratulate Theo Kondouris and the crew at Supa Barn who have agreed to match dollar for dollar our $20 000 spend so that means that $40 000 (a semi trailer load) of food will make it’s way down to Victoria.
“On top of this, ClubsACT, through our member clubs will donate $30, 750 cash to The Salvo’s to help them with their appeal.”
“ Canberra clubs will continue their individual fund raising efforts over the next few weeks,” Max Mercer said.
