Canberra’s Clubs will today fight to see who is the best in the second ACTTAB Chef’s Battle, a culinary competition part of the ClubsACT Gala Dinner and Awards.
The competition will run from 9:00am to 12:30pm at the Canberra Institute of Technology – Tourism and Hotel Management kitchens and will culminate in the naming of the winners at the awards night on Friday 9 May at the Southern Cross Club Canberra.
Chief Executive Jeff House said the competition showcases the excellent talent behind the scenes in club kitchens and attracts high quality entrants.
“Teams consisting of two chefs from a club received details on key ingredients three days before the competition and are then required to work together to compile a menu to impress the judges. The ingredients to be used in this year’s competition are hand-made flour dough (made onsite), whole chicken and quince.
“As clubs have diversified, their food service offerings have never been better. Today is an example of what patrons can be offered in clubs and highlights them as outstanding eateries.
“The quality of food available in our region is remarkable and to be able to make that a feature of the competition, helps us to showcase the best of the ACT Club Industry.
“Today’s competition will include a team from the National Press Club of Australia, led by Head Chef Paul Butler who is teaming up with first year apprentice club Daryl Harris. Paul has prepared meals for every Prime Minister in the last 20 years, has cooked for heads of state, royalty and many high profile celebrities.
“Other teams include the Hellenic Club, Southern Cross Club Tuggeranong and Vikings Town Centre.
“First place winners will receive a trip to Hamilton Island and are announced at the ClubsACT Gala Dinner and Awards night.
