Today’s opening of Canberra’s newest pre-school and childcare centre, funded entirely by the Hellenic Club of Canberra, is a tremendous example of the contribution clubs make to the ACT community according to ClubsACT Chief Executive, Jeff House.
“Every Canberran knows our clubs are major contributors to their local communities and the opening of the St Nicholas Greek-Australian Pre-School and Childcare Centre is a very tangible example of that contribution.
“It is vital that the ACT Government get the policy settings right in relation to clubs so that more of these centres can be built. Clubs have land and the good will to undertake similar developments, but in many cases taxes such as Lease Variation Charge can be a huge barrier.
“Development is good for the community, good for the clubs and ultimately good for the government so it’s important that the ACT Government do everything they can to facilitate that development”, Mr House said.
The St. Nicholas Greek-Australian Pre-School and Childcare Centre was built by the Hellenic Club with the generous assistance from a large number of contributors from the local Greek community. The Hellenic Club will operate the centre, located in Narrabundah.
“I don’t know a lot about childcare centres but after visiting the completed site, I can say that it is a wonderful location and a wonderful space for children to recreate, learn and socialise with other kids.
“I congratulate the Hellenic Club of Canberra and the local Greek community for achieving something that represents one of the best examples of a club and the community joining together to create something special”, Mr House concluded.
